A correct IBAN only means the number is well formed. It does not prove that the account exists or who holds it. Before a large payment, confirm with the payee by another channel.
How the IBAN is built
Two letters for the country, two check digits, then the national part. The check digits use MOD 97 from ISO 13616: move the first four characters to the end, turn letters into numbers (A is 10, Z is 35), and the remainder of the division by 97 must be 1. That catches most typing errors, not all.
